As a sutler, she is the favourite of the entire 21st Regiment and especially of the young Tyrolean Tonio, to whom she has promised her heart. When the Marquise of Berkenfield recognises the young woman as her daughter, she has other plans – a marriage befitting her rank. But Marie and Tonio cannot forget each other. He reveals Marie’s “past” to aristocratic society and thus recaptures his soldier bride.
